SMA 2009 Meeting

The SMA will hold its 2009 annual meeting Wednesday, November 11 through Saturday, November 14 in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. Geralyn Franklin, SMA’s Conference Location Coordinator, has once again found a great city and hotel for our annual gathering. The Asheville Renaissance Hotel offers outstanding accommodations and amenities in the heart of Asheville, with easy access to dozens of art galleries, several theatres, live music venues and wonderful restaurants, among other attractions. The standard group rate for SMA 2009 is $129 single/double. You can find more information about the Asheville Renaissance Hotel at http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/avlbr-renaissance-asheville-hotel/. It’s not the beach, but Asheville, set in the mountains of North Carolina, promises to be just as good.

The Call for Papers is available on the SMA website at http://www.southernmanagement.org/meetings/2009. Please note that the deadline for submissions is April 10, 2009. All submissions should be made through the online submission system, which will open in February, 2009.

The quality of the SMA program completely depends on your involvement. So please consider submitting your work to the conference. In addition, to ensure a quality conference, we need good reviewers. You can use the online system to sign up to be a reviewer. Our outstanding track chairs (listed in the Call for Papers) will appreciate it.

As part of a continuing effort to enhance the quality of the program, we will continue with two initiatives that started with last year’s conference, a Paper Development Workshop and the Most Innovative Session Award.

More information about each of these program enhancement initiatives is available elsewhere in this newsletter and on the SMA website. We hope you will consider participating in both.

If you’ve attended previous SMA meetings, you already know how enjoyable they can be, both professionally and personally. If you haven’t yet attended an SMA meeting, you really are missing a special conference. Whichever category you fall into, please make plans to submit your work, to serve as a reviewer, session chair, or discussant, and absolutely plan to join us in the mountains in Asheville. It just won’t be the same without you!
